On August 8th, 2023, The Future Society submitted a draft list of clauses to govern the development of general-purpose AI systems (GPAIS) to the U.S. NIST Generative AI Public Working Group.

The draft clauses were informed by multiple workshops and consultations conducted in 2022-2023 with technical staff and engineers from industry including frontier AI labs as well as independent experts. The goal was to develop recommendations for model design, development, and testing.

This list of recommended clauses is intended to inspire further research into best practices and to foster the development of advanced AI systems in a safe and trustworthy manner. The document is a working draft and feedback is welcome. Future versions may provide definitions for general-purpose AI and elaboration on the rationale and goals for each suggested clause.
